Johns Hopkins University, Laboratory for Computational Sensing & Robotics (JHU LCSR)

During this visit...

  • We invited 4 FTC teams (#18442, 19458, 19890, 19941); a total of 22 students joined the JHU LCSR tour.

  • Mr. Mehrfard and Mr. Hadi showed us robots for surgery, locomotion on various terrains, space exploration, etc.

  • We practiced remote-controlled intuitive surgery using a sophisticated Da Vinci robotic surgery machine.

Automated Precision Inc. (API) Metrology

Dr. Song, the vice president of API, guided us through the laser tracker manufacturing workshop, where we saw industrial CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling machine,  lathes,  CMMs (Coordinate measurement machines), laser rangefinders, and more. During the tour, Dr. Song  taught us about how precision was used and achieved in robotics, as well as his experience in business and engineering, which we applied eagerly.

Dr. Nusinovich (Sr. Editor at Science)

We were fortunate to connect with Dr. Nusinovich when seeking a mentor on public presentation and communication. Dr. Nusinovich joined us both virtually and in-person commenting our presentation and the portfolio. She inspired us to present as if sharing stories to friends and/or relatives.

8wk Summer Training Program

In collaboration with RRI, we hosted a 8wk summer training program focusing on learning the basics of hardware and software for FTC. At the end of the season, we attended a mock competition (organized by RRI). Six students signed up with NewT.exe for the summer training session, 4 of them finished the whole training, and 3 of them joined NewT.exe at the end of summer.

Robotics Merit Badge (MB) Training for Boy Scout Troops

This is the 3rd year we held the robotics merit badge training with local boy scout troops. We created a curriculum and shared the program with other FTC teams (#19458 & 19890). We led the robotics training. Through robotics presentation, demo and hands-on building, 16 scouts from multiple troops gained the Robotics merit badge this year.

Public Presentations on 3D Printing & Java Programming

The 3D printing presentation was accompanied with showing three 3D printers (Fused Deposition Modeling direct drive or Delta drive and Stereolithography). The audience raised a lot of questions on our presentations. We recorded these 2 presentations and posted them as YouTube videos (NewT 17080) and gained > 180 total views since Oct 2022.

Giving a Presentation about what is FIRST Robotics to a Coding Dojo

We were able to setup a meeting with a Coding Dojo located in Phoenix, Arizona. We taught 15 students ranging for grades 3-6 about FIRST including FRC, FTC, FLL, and especially explaining FLL over a season. We also showed them how could create or join their own FLL team. In addition, we demonstrated our robot, Aluminator, and the organization of its code to the Arizona group.
